This morning, D and I sat down our class of rowdy 1st graders and laid down some new rules, and by D and I, I mean D. I just served to back her up on her decisions. The kids were given their new set of rules and then, we had them play tag if they were done with their breakfast. I think that this REALLY was helpful in burning off some of that extra energy that we have been seeing on previous days. They also got to play kickball in recreation today...and that also helped! We have had some difficulty in getting our a couple of our girls to participate in activities. One little girl in particular refuses to try anything that there is a possibility that she might fail at. She seems to have a BIG issue with the thought of failure. We were so proud of her this afternoon when she actually participated in the dancing (and by dancing, I mean made up movements to music) for the first time! That is a big step for her! WE are praying that we continue to see improvements!
We also had a gentleman speak to our class today that is from Haiti. He told the children about some of the differences between Haiti and the US. D and I were a little scared that the kids would be disrespectful, but they actually sat quietly and paid attention...much to our amazement! He told the children about the beauty in his country and the lush, fertile soil...but also about the hardships. He told them that many of the children have little or no food. They do not live in proper shelters and they have no transportation other than their own two feet. I think that that was a little hard for the children to grasp. They wanted to know why they couldn't realize when they were hungry and learn to eat more than one meal a day...or why, if they did know that they were hungry, they didn't just get something to eat.
Today our theme was Go Tell. So, at art, the kids made microphones out of toilet paper tubes, Styrofoam balls, and aluminum foil.
D and I definitely left today feeling much better about our day than we had yesterday! Hopefully today was the turning point for the week...and hopefully things will continue to get better from here on out!
Tonight, after Zack got home from work, we went to a cookout that a friend was hosting...at a friend of hers house. The house is really a "cabin" in the middle of some woods...and by cabin, I mean 4 bedroom home in the woods. You have to drive on a gravel road to get to it. It is BEAUTIFUL! The lady whose home it is has it beautifully decorated and I would Absolutely LOVE her kitchen! (well, the whole house really!)
We only knew a couple of the people that were there tonight, or I would have taken some pictures of it to share! I felt a little awkward since I didn't really know everyone...but everyone seemed really nice. Zack of course could just talk to all of the guys about mountain biking, sports, video games, or guns...it ended up being a fun evening despite my awkward feelings at the beginning. We made tacos and everyone brought an ingredient for dinner. Zack and I were given the task of bringing lettuce and queso for the tacos. Lettuce was not a big deal, but I really hate queso from a jar...so, I was perusing the cheese at our local grocery store and I found some mexican melting cheese...so, I thought..why not try it out. Of course, that could have been a really bad thing seeing as I do not really know most of the people that were at the dinner tonight...and this would be the only thing that they would be able to judge my culinary prowess by! ...So, no pressure huh!? The cheese dip actually ended up being pretty good! I melted the cheese with milk as directed, and then I added about 1/2 a can of rotel to it. I thought that it tasted pretty good, and the mostly empty bowl proved that I was not alone in that assumption! I was VERY thankful that it turned out! It wasn't melting at first...so things were a little touch and go for a while there! ...so, that it turned out was definitely a relief!
